Standing up to a rack of BBQ ribs is no easy task, but a big yet easy drinking red wine courtesy of superstar winemaker Pete Stolpman always does the trick. His 2019 La Cuadrilla is a Châteauneuf-styled southern Rhone blend that is predominantly Syrah and absolutely delicious. Fresh, vibrant red fruits that taste silky, with great structure and length, this is always one of my favorites. The profits from the wine go directly to the crew who pick the grapes and make it all happen.
“A consistent winner in every vintage, especially now that the site is owned by Tensley, the 2019 Syrah Colson Canyon boasts a deep, inky hue as well as backward, primary blue fruits, charcoal, and ground pepper-like aromas and flavors. This big, rich, full-bodied, thrilling Syrah is more seamless and elegant than the 2018 was at this stage, but it’s certainly in the same ballpark. It will keep for 10-15 years if you’re so inclined. This is one of the larger production cuvées from Tensley, and it saw 15% stems and 20% new French oak.”

“The 2019 Red Wine checks in as 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, and the balance Viognier, all of which was 85% de-stemmed, and it spent 10 months in neutral oak. Lots of red, blue, and black fruits as well as peppery and spice dominate the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with plenty of fruit, surprising complexity, and good overall freshness. It’s a smoking good red as well as a value.”
