Stolpman Vineyards La Cuadrilla 2023

92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 92 Points, Vinous

Standing up to a rack of BBQ ribs is no easy task, but a big yet easy-drinking red wine courtesy of superstar winemaker Pete Stolpman always does the trick. The newly released 2023 La Cuadrilla is a dark-fruited gem that boasts double 92-point reviews from the two most influential critics in wine. Heck, Antonio Galloni of Vinous even called it “lights out” and a “fabulous value”.

In the 2023 vintage, this is a seamless Châteauneuf-styled southern Rhone blend that is predominantly Syrah, followed by Grenache, Mourvedre and Sangiovese. It really is so juicy and delicious. Fresh, vibrant black fruits and licorice that taste silky, with great structure and length. It’s also absolutely worth mentioning that 100% of profits from the wine go directly to the crew who pick the grapes and make it all happen. People helping people!

92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese whose proceeds are divided among Stolpman’s vineyard workers, the 2023 La Cuadrilla is one of the better values in all California wine. It opens with a beautifully floral, energetic nose supplemented with focused, leathery accents. The palate is plush and succulent, concluding with a quenching, juicy and simply delicious finish framed by fine-grained tannins.

92 Points, Vinous
The 2023 La Cuadrilla is a fabulous entry-level offering. Bright, punchy and full of character, the 2023 delivers superb quality and striking purity of fruit. It’s also a fabulous value. This blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese is lights-out.

One of my favorite memories is running up the rugged hills of the Stolpman estate in Santa Barbara County. It’s a wild place, with jackrabbits the size of coyotes and a fun rope swing that drops you into a swimming hole where if you don’t scramble out fast enough, you are likely to get a bite or 2 from angry carp. Running through the estate is where you really get a sense for the limestone there, an utter rarity in CA and is absolutely one of the secrets to Pete Stolpman’s aromatically complex, vibrant wines.

His latest release, La Cuadrillais much more than a stylish, elegant blend of Syrah and Grenache. Each year, the Stolpman’s designate one block of the vineyard for the full time farm workers at the estate to manage entirely on their own. Staying within the general principles of the Stolpman farming philosophy, la cuadrilla or “the crew” make all the farming decisions, from pruning to harvest.

In return, the Stolpmans give 100% of the profits back to the workers. Pete says it’s the best motivational tool they could have ever put into place; this piece of ownership breeds loyalty and immense pride in their work.
