Tatomer Gruner Veltliner Meeresborden 2024

“Graham Tatomer is one of the most unlikely superstars in American wine.” -Antonio Galloni

95 Points, James Suckling – 93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

I first discovered the wines of Graham Tatomer at a tasting along with a number of the very best Santa Barbara producers. There were a lot of great wines at this tasting – but this one stole the show. Ever since then, you can count me as one of many Tatomer fans, with the list growing rapidly each vintage. I’d argue that Graham is making the very best non-Chardonnay white wines in all of America right now. Judging by the way his wines are scored, very few folks would disagree. This crushes with pure, sweet stone fruit up front followed by this incredible salty minerality and natural acid that holds everything together perfectly in place.  Be forewarned now: you’re going to get hooked on these!

A seaweed and crushed oyster-shell quality to the nose starts things off on a saline, savory note, but it’s fleshed out with unexpectedly tropical, white-grapefruit flavors seasoned with fresh ginger. Those layers unfurl and linger through the tactile, phenolic finish. Drink or hold.

Sourced from John Sebastiano and Kick-on Ranch, the 2024 Grüner Veltliner Meeresboden was matured in a mix of acacia casks and stainless tanks. It is the brightest and most herbal of the Grüner Veltliner bottlings while retaining an admirable degree of poise from front to back. The palate is a beautiful midpoint of honeyed, supple and energetic textures, seamlessly flowing into a sturdy, layered finish.

As Antonio Galloni noted, “Graham Tatomer is one of the most unlikely superstars in American wine.” If you want to make a name for yourself in this country, usually you have to do it making Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. Or all three. Graham Tatomer does not.

His obsession with the Loire Valley and Alsatian whites has brought him to southern California where he makes Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. But despite the odds being firmly against him, Tatomer has become like a cult vineyard in the 20 years it has been around – making some of the greatest cool-climate white wines this country has ever seen. What started off as a 400 case gigantic gamble has turned into a 4100 case super competitive allocation.

As Galloni said, “You’re not going to find a better white wine value in the states than this baby right here.”

“Graham Tatomer has staked his claim on a unique slice of the wine world, producing a meticulously crafted roster of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner that successfully exudes the precision of his Old World influences. The addition of a beautiful and overperforming array of Pinot Noirs to the lineup has brought diversity and expanded his reach considerably. As gifted as Tatomer is with dry iterations of aromatic white wines, his off-dry and sweet bottlings—produced in Spätlese, Auslese and Beerenauslese styles but labeled in code to avoid legal issues—are indeed on another level and accentuate his prowess in harnessing luscious, decadent textures with elegance and crystalline clarity.”Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
