Sandro Fay ‘Valgella’ Valtellina Superiore 2022

93 Points, James Suckling

Valtellina wines are distinct, high-altitude, alpine reds produced in Lombardy from Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca). These are lighter-bodied, acidic, and mineral-driven compared to Piedmontese counterparts, featuring notes of tart cherry, rose, and tobacco from steep, terraced vineyards ranging from 900 to 3000 feet above sea level!

James Suckling loved this one, calling it “ Fleshy, flavorful and full-bodied” as well as “Sleek and voluminous.” He gave it a 93-point score, which is one of the higher scores you’re going to see for these nuanced wines. This is so beautiful: bright, floral, with great acidity and a touch of that signature Nebbiolo leather. Mountain Nebbiolo at its best!

93 Points, James Suckling
Deep and concentrated nose and palate full of blackberries and dark cherries. Fleshy, flavorful and full-bodied on the palate with lots of fruit. Firm tannins but nothing chewy here. Sleek and voluminous. A co-fermentation of malbec, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Drink from 2025.

Sandro Fay has been revitalizing his family’s modest vineyard in San Giacomo di Teglio, nestled within the Valtellina Superiore DOCG region since the early 1970’s. Today, his two children Marco and Elena carry on the family legacy. Marco honed his skills in Barolo before returning to craft distinguished single-vineyard wines from the terraced family vineyards so the style is a little bit similar. The terroir though, is not.
