The Boillot family’s 2022 Volnay ‘Les Angles’ is yet another outstanding example of the vintage. The bouquet is pure and precise, wafting from the glass in a mix of cherries, red plums, raw cocoa, gamebird, a nice touch of whole clusters, an excellent foundation of minerality, bonfire, mustard seed and cedar. On the palate, the wine is bright, full-bodied, soil-driven and has a beautiful core of fruit, with lovely focus and balance, fine-grained tannins and a long, tangy and complex finish. This is going to be an outstanding bottle of Volnay once it’s ready to drink.

Here the timid nose is more deeply pitched still with its array of plum, dark currant, humus and just turned earth. There is at once excellent volume as well as a refined texture to the utterly delicious and vibrant middleweight flavors that flash evident minerality on the bitter pit fruit-suffused finish. This firm effort needs to develop better depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur. Outstanding.
