94 Points, Descorchados
This is the second vintage of Rivas, a 100% malbec from Finca Los Carolinos, established in 1927 in the Agrelo area, plus contributions from the Lunlunta area in Maipú. The idea here is to offer more fruit in a wine that spent less time in barrels (one year) than the other house reds, especially Château Vieux and Montchenot, which are barrel aged for more than three years. Here, the sweet fruits of Agrelo dominate the palate, plus some herbal and spicy notes. The palate is soft and full of red fruit in a context of medium body and great balance. A wine that modernizes the López style, but without abandoning it.
The 2022 Rivas comes from the historic Lopez family, who’ve been making wine in Mendoza since 1898. What I love about this one is how it strikes such a nice balance – you get all that juicy Malbec fruit you’re looking for, but with a touch of that traditional Lopez elegance that sets it apart from your typical Argentine bottles.
The Lopez family is pretty famous in Argentina for their old-school reds, many aged for years in massive French oak casks. While those wines are incredible, this new project shows they know exactly what many of us are looking for in our everyday drinking – something that’s generous and immediately enjoyable, but still has some real character behind it.
The fruit comes from their Los Carolinos vineyard in Agrelo and some choice parcels in Lunlunta. In the glass, it’s exactly what you want – ripe and generous but not over the top, with just enough of that old-school Lopez character to make things interesting.
