Dominus Estate 2021

“One of the legendary Dominus, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably in the same league as the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2010, and 1991, and to my mind, wine simply doesn’t get any better. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as an incredible perfume of blackcurrants, crushed stone, cedar pencil, smoke tobacco, and baking spices, its rich, full-bodied, and voluptuously textured, with ripe yet building tannins. It reminds me slightly of the 2010 (maybe the 2013), and I suspect it will have a similar evolution. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, and it will evolve gracefully for 30+ years. Hats off to the team of Christian Moueix and director Tod Mostero.”

100 Points, Lisa Perotti-Brown, Wine Independent
“The 2021 Dominus, 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, is opaque purple-black in color. It needs a lot of coaxing to lure out scents of freshly crushed blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, stewed plums, and boysenberries giving way to subtle nuances of violets, licorice, and tar plus a touch of cedar in the background. The full-bodied palate is taut with densely laden, muscular black fruits framed by a firm grainy texture and well-played tension, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. A stunning vinous record of time and place, this is a 50-year+ Napa Cabernet to be experienced across generations.”

99 Points, Wine Spectator
This shows density on par with the ’18, with a core of cassis and plum notes still tucked away a bit behind a wall of structure, while singed toast and licorice hints peek in throughout. The youthfully backward aspect shows on the finish as well, where this throws a chunk of tannins to the fore. Very concentrated and with serious tension, this is a strapping young wine that shows what a warm and very dry vintage feels like. Think ’18/’13 combo here. Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc.

In the absolute blockbuster 2021 vintage in Napa, there may be no better masterpiece conducted than the double 100-point Dominus Estate. Napa was in need of a big vintage after a disappointing 2020 year marred by fires. But I’m not sure that anyone would have predicted a vintage so smooth with so many historic bottlings. Make no mistake – this is absolutely one of those bottles.

Wine Spectator came in first at 99 points, a sign that this one will be included on some Top 100 lists to come. They called this one a mix of 2018 and 2013 – two outrageously good vintages of this iconic wine.

But Jeb Dunnuck wasn’t afraid to give it the extra push, giving a rare 100-point designation. He even went as far to compare it to the all-time greats, calling it “One of the legendary Dominus, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably in the same league as the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2010, and 1991, and to my mind, wine simply doesn’t get any better.”

The Wine Advocate’s former Editor-in-Chief gone solo act, Lisa Perrotti-Brown of the Wine Independent emphatically agreed. She came in at 100 points as well, writing “A stunning vinous record of time and place, this is a 50-year+ Napa Cabernet to be experienced across generations.”

I have just a few bottles of this all-time classic collector to offer up. Do not miss it.
