This picturesque estate lies in the commune of San Casciano, just outside of Florence. Joshi Goldschimdt is a farmer first; his pristine vineyards contain Sangiovese, ranging in age from 5 to 35 years, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines, averaging 20 years in age. The vines are tended organically, the grapes, hand harvested.
The Cornazello Rosato that this wonderful organic estate crafts each year is not your typical Rose, and that is highlighted again with their 2021 effort. The wine absolutely sings in the glass– a beautiful Rose of Sangiovese rounded out with a drop of Merlot. It’s flat-out delicious.

Bava’s ‘Libera’ Barbera d’Asti utilizes 100% fruit from the special Pianoalto di Crena Vineyard. It’s a silky smooth, zippy young-vine expression beaming with energy. I tried it around room temperature and it was absolutely humming, but I think this one would be the perfect red wine to enjoy slightly chilled too.

Just like in 2007, they sensed something special with the 2016 vintage and decided to release it late, waiting for all the wine’s components to come together. Some would call it a bold move, but those folks haven’t tasted this one. I have. It’s so good, I wouldn’t question a single thing they did. Not only that, but it gives us a chance to lock into one of the last great 2016s and do so at a price you wouldn’t believe considering all the big scores and pedigree attached.

It has an intense straw yellow color. The aromas are all intriguing: white tea leaves, perfectly ripe Anjou pear, crushed stone. The body is full but bright with bright acid – bone dry and persistent. It also tauts a 92 point score from James Suckling and a 91 from Wine Spectator, but trust me, this drinks well above its station.

You aren’t going to do better finding a racy, mouthwateringly spicy, zipped-up bottle of Rose than this Italian gem. You’re certainly not going to find one as highly rated or highly recommended by two very-well respected wine critics. And, of course, you won’t find an uglier label out there either.
