Perfectly situated in the famous hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, arguably Chianti’s top commune, Fattoria di Valiano has a distinct advantage over just about every other winery in the Chianti Classico area.
They’re situated in the southern part of the province of Siena on an estate that dates back more than 2,000 years. Even better, the vineyards are all between 350-400 meters above sea level with southwest exposure, giving them the perfect setup to make age-worthy, memorable Sangiovese.
In what was a hot and consistent 2019 vintage in Tuscany, Valiano turned out one of the best Chianti Classicos of the year, a sleek, energetic Sangiovese that hits with red and black fruits and some notes of dark chocolate with a silky smooth finish.
It’s safe to say, like most CC producers, Valiano is having their day. The high altitude hills of galestro and limestone soils may have made for austere and unforgiving wines twenty years ago, but with the new normal in Tuscany of super dry and hot summers, these wines now show better than ever before. This is arguably the best one made since the Piccini family took over in 1995!

92 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast
Cedar, mature black-skinned fruit and pipe tobacco aromas mingle together in the glass along with a whiff of iris. Smooth and savory, the palate offers ripe Marasca cherry, licorice and hints of espresso framed in polished, fine-grained tannins.

A fresh, juicy red with aromas of mushrooms, cranberries, sour cherries and dried tobacco. Firm, fine tannins and crunchy acidity. From organically grown grapes. Delicious now.

At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
