Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore 2010

With the help of Andre Tchelistcheff, the famous agronomist, Marchese Lodovico Antinori planted the first French vines in Bolgheri which lies in the heart of Tuscany’s coastal region, Maremma in the early 1980’s. It’s safe to say the region has never been the same since.

Ornellaia has established itself among the iconic wine estates in Italy (and beyond). The estate is dedicated to producing charming, rich and opulent wines, full of Mediterranean character and finesse, reflecting the estate’s unique terroir in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast.

Ornellaia is one third of what has come to be known as the Big 3 Super Tuscans, along with Tignanello (the first Super Tuscan) and Sassicaia. Each year, these are some of the most gorgeous, age-worthy bottlings and the magnificent 2010 bottling from Ornellaia is no different. This is still a baby, but already is starting to show it’s potential as a near perfect wine, so it’s no surprising that this one comes with all the big scores. This should make a few lucky collectors very, very happy.

98 Points, Vinous
How many dinners anywhere start with a wine on a level with the 2010 Ornellaia? I imagine not many. But that’s exactly the way we get going. Super-expressive aromatics soar out of the glass as the 2010 shows off its personality. Sweet herbs, tobacco, licorice, mocha and tar wrap around a core of intense dark fruit. Racy, powerful and majestic, the 2010 is a total stunner.

97 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Poured from the special anniversary bottle, the 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a truly outstanding wine that leaves a lasting memory for those who are lucky enough to enjoy it. What stands out is the absolutely seamless-seamless-seamless (yes, it’s worth repeating three times) integration of its many moving parts. The wine magically transitions from cherry, spice, chocolate and espresso in one melodic and continuous loop. It exudes balance and elegance over long, delicious minutes. It is profoundly impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. Of all the grapevines planted on the Ornellaia estate, the 2010 vintage showed best results with Merlot, says Leonardo Raspini. Because the harvest was later than usual, the early-ripening grape enjoyed a slow and steady evolution.

97 Points, Decanter
If they had not increased the Merlot to 40% of the blend in this moderate to cool vintage, they wouldn’t have found the balance between firm bones from the Cabernet Sauvignon, and fleshy meat. The Merlot was harvested extremely late in October, lending an elegance of crystallised violets, fresh and precise cassis fruit and a white chocolate finish over leathery notes. The wine is full of earthiness and is dense and well-extracted over the mid-palate, with a creamy, classy cigar-box finish.

97 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The 2010 Ornellaia celebrates the wine’s 25th anniversary, and it could not have been a more spectacular vintage. It opens with aromas of crushed blue flowers, black berries, pipe tobacco and thyme that give way to an elegant, structured and polished palate. It delivers intense blackberry flavors layered with white pepper, Mediterranean herbs, mineral and mocha brightened by fresh acidity alongside smooth, velvety tannins. This will age and develop for decades.
