With the birth of Caymus, Meomi, Quilt and others, the newest generation of Wagners has helped a small empire become a much larger more diverse and formidable empire with Charlie and Jenny even launching their own major brands that have enjoyed incredible success beyond Napa Valley. With Belle Glos, Elouan, and Mer Soleil as proofs of concept, the entire family began sussing out additional land just beyond Napa’s borders.
To the southeast, they discovered the Suisun Valley – a tiny AVA just ⅙ the size of Napa that boasts ample sun to pair with its soils which can be slightly richer than Napa’s, making it the ideal pairing for big red grapes like Cabernet, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Still mainly family farmed but with similar weather, it very much has the feel that Napa Valley did back in the 60’s.
They locked in, made their plans and got to work. In early 2022, the Caymus’ forward thinking venture into the Suisun Valley will commence with the grand opening of a new state of the art winery right in the heart of the tiny AVA. All that planning for the future has paid dividends with their Walking Fool wines. These are things of beauty.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous

Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
