The Prisoner Napa Valley Red Blend 2017 (1.5L Magnum)

This is the first time I was ever able to secure us library Magnums of one of America’s most popular wines, and we’re doing it at the best price around. Not only that, but this was from the 2017 vintage, a super age-worthy cooler vintage that was also one of the last ones with all Napa Valley fruit. This is a a gorgeous, elegantly aged wine with silky notes of raspberry, blackberry, vanilla on the attack with some beautifully integrated sweet oak notes. It’s so silky smooth and layered, could probably benefit from a little time in a decanter, but once it starts to open up – wow.

Original price was: $110.00.Current price is: $85.00.

The famous blend combines Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono from throughout the Napa Valley, combining the grapes into a robust, flavorful explosion of soft, richly rounded fruit and body. It’s undeniably appealing.

Considered to be one of the greatest success stories in modern-day wine, The Prisoner was launched in 2000 by Orin Swift founder, Dave Phinney who saw tremendous potential in California outside of the two most popular grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Making a modern version of a ‘field blend’ Phinney chose to make a Zinfandel dominant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Charbono serving as the backbone. To call it a hit, would almost be doing it an injustice.

The Prisoner absolutely EXPLODED on the scene. With a unique burst of flavor and a fruit forward style that can only be compared to the wines the Caymus Family is able to produce, the Prisoner became a critic darling, earning multiple appearances in Wine Spectator’s ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ list.
