We introduced Sesta di Sopra last year, a tiny estate in Brunello di Montalcino who has been making fantastic wine for around 25 years. Proprietors Ettore and Enrica Spina bought the estate and replanted the vineyards in the ‘80s.
They picked a very special spot, within the designated cru of Sesta, an area that Italian critic Ian D’Agata has likened to a Grand Cru. Makes sense, the vines are planted at elevation, some of the highest points in Brunello. They are rooted in calcareous soil and in close proximity to the Orcia River, which brings a cooling influence to what is a normally a very hot part of southern Tuscany. The elevation, mineral soil and big swings in day and night temperatures produce powerful wines yet an uncommon degree of elegance.
The Spinas’ IGT Sangiovese is like a fantasy cross of Brunello and Vosne-Romanee; lush and juicy like great Pinot but with the heft and brawn of the best of Brunello. I met a winemaker a very long time ago who called these kinds of wines, “Big Boys that can Dance”…exactly!…the 2018 IGT Sangiovese is like a Baby Brunello, very stylish, with fine aromatics, knocked-out fruit and a long, mineral finish. Perfect with any thing off the grill as we try to maximize the end of summer.

Perfect with a nice, juicy steak or anything off the grill.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
