In 1968, Tom Rochioli planted his first Pinot Noir vines at his family’s estate. In 1985, he finally made the estate’s first wine. Only two years later, Wine Spectator would name it the ‘Best Pinot Noir in America’. Just like that: a superstar was born.
In a hot, dry and beautiful 2023 vintage, this is as powerful as I can ever remember it, yet still comes with plenty of grace. Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it 94 points, calling out “Waves of spicy fruit delivered in a silky texture, energized by vibrant acidity and a very long, nuanced finish.” I think that’s fair to say. It’s a super classy Russian River Valley Pinot from the Richiolis.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate bursts from the glass with scents of cranberry, blackberry, juniper, Fernet and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is open and inviting. Waves of spicy fruit are delivered in a silky texture and energized by vibrant acidity, and it has a very long, nuanced finish.

A polished, silky, pretty and streamlined version, redolent of blood orange, warmed peach, bitter cherry and damson plum fruit. Offers light accents of savory and rose petal for perfume, with a lingering sandalwood edge on the tail end.

The Rochioli story starts in 1959 when Joe Rochioli Jr. planted Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon on a ranch along Westside Road in the Russian River Valley. He was happy, but really eager to plant Pinot Noir after his father passed, even though most said it was a mistake. By 1968, the first Pinot vines went into the ground. In 1985, Tom Rochioli made the first estate wine. Two years later, Wine Spectator would name it the ‘Best Pinot Noir in America’. A superstar was born.
