In 1970, Enrique Forner founded Marqués de Cáceres Unión, a historic alliance of growers in the village of Cenicero in the Rioja Alta subregion of Rioja. The pioneering Forner family has been devoted to the wine trade for five generations and has been a major player since they first started late in the 19th century.
Their search for the best vine growers and vineyards in Rioja and the introduction of a Bordeaux concept revolutionized the production and business model of the entire region. They work with one single objective: producing the highest quality wines. Today this obsession continues to be the driving force of Cristina Forner, the fifth generation of this distinguished wine family.
Cristina’s Rioja Rosado is a particularly high note in her memorable lineup of wines. Comprised of mostly Tempranillo, this one has a lot of energy and a a very pretty pale pink color. On the nose, a floral bouquet accompanied by small red berry fruits and a slight touch of spice. This one offers a lot of juicy flavors with refreshing acidity and balanced structure. It’s an elegant rosé with character and good length.

“Freshly crushed strawberries, plums and grapefruit on the nose, following through to a crisp and fresh palate. Simple and bone-dry, but has thirst-quenching crunchiness and a pithy finish.”

“Cherry skins and figs scent this 100% Cabernet Franc rosé. An energetic effervescence releases sweet cherry and tart cranberry. Minerality plays a key role on the long finish.”

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
