Finally, my barrels from my Kentucky trip in January are beginning to arrive. I was beginning to think they were shipped to China & returning on the slow boat. I’ve been particularly anxious for the two that I picked at Lux Row with master distiller, John Rempi.
If you’re unfamiliar with Lux Row, they are in the bourbon capital of the world, Bardstown Kentucky & are best known for Ezra Brooks, Rebel, & Blood Oath. I was allowed to grab a barrel of two of their prized offerings but there’s not a whole lot to go around.
My first offering is a cask strength Ezra Brooks born on 9/21/2017. We found her on the 6th floor of warehouse 6 and it she at 127.3 proof when we tasted. I proofed this barrel slightly down to 120. As you know, I love high proof bourbon that drinks like low proof. This is the kind of bourbon that can get you in to a bit of trouble because you would never know its at 120 proof.

This is an absolute beauty from Smooth Ambler that checked in at 118.6 Proof (59.3% alc). It was aged for 6 years and the mashbill and is coming out of the gates ready to go. It’s got an inviting nose of pumpkin spice, tobacco, fresh leather and chocolate with rich flavors of Caramel apple, toasted oak and cream of corn. It also has a great long and delicious finish that leaves you with notes of lingering spice.
It’s about that time again when I offer up three great white wines that you might not be familiar with, in the perfect introductory to spring case price. This one is guaranteed to please a lot of palates. Crisp, mineral white wines that cost less than $20/btl but taste like $50/btl gems. My kind of wine. This is the ultimate spring sipper case, perfect for hosting or for sipping by the pool. Four bottles of each of three great wines:
Brunori Verdicchio ‘Le Gemme’ 2021
Domaine Saint Amant Côtes du Rhône La Borry 2020
Familia Torres ‘Celeste Sur Lies’ Verdejo 2021
With their ninth installment, Whistle Pig’s Boss Hog keeps all five of their ‘Boss Hog’ promises and then some. It’s a super unique bottling as always – a Straight Rye Whiskey with two world’s first finishes. It was finished in barrels seasoned with Greek fig nectar and scratch tentura, a Greek style liqueur. It’s a single barrel bottled at proof between 102-107. For another nice touch, The Boss Hog IX features 9 unique designs, in the likeness of the 9 Muses, randomly distributed on bottles across the country.
This project has become one of my favorite things. Sending Eddie Russell’s Reserve Bourbon barrels down to Jalisco, Mexico to Espolon where fill them with their knockout Añejo Tequila. Then they send me back a barrel of our very own Tequila, with so many intricacies that separate it from any other I’ve tasted. All for a price that’s better than a regular bottle of good Tequila! Great on its own but surprisingly really enjoyable with food as well.
