It’s no secret that I get a lot of private barrels every year. I was even told by one big name distillery that I get more than any single restaurant in the country. All this to say, I don’t have to do a lot begging for barrels. That’s of course unless I’m talking to the Buffalo Trace Distillery.
Sheesh. They are brutal with their allocation. In the last three years, I’ve received a total of two barrels of the Buffalo Trace Bourbon. Two!
Thankfully they always take care of me in the Pappy bottle allocation for the bar, but this year they really came through. I called and asked if I was going to receive my barrel allocation of BT. They said not this year, but we have something very special to thank me for all my support instead. Hmm… “Ok, I’m intrigued, what do you have”? How about a private barrel of a 10-year Eagle Rare? Boom!!! This is such a special bottling. It’s going to fly out the door.
Nose: Toasted oak, maple syrup, burnt orange peel, honey, toffee, buttered popcorn
Palate: Rich and full-bodied, with notes of buttered popcorn, honey, tobacco, vanilla & roasted pineapple
Finish: Long and rich, with notes of oak, vanilla, toffee, butterscotch, and tannins

When my yearly allocation came in for W.L. Weller, I was pleased to find out that I was granted a few ‘bonus bottles’ by the powers that be. Hey, you know I’m not arguing. I only got a few more the Single Barrel, 12-Year and the Antique so I decided to put those into 3-packs and sell those as well. Get in while you can, I only have three. Each 3-pack sampler includes 1 bottle each of the following:
Weller Single Barrel (orange)
Weller 12 year (black)
Old Weller Antique (red)

The Don Fulano Blanco is a super lively, refreshing Tequila with a beautiful clear hue. It’s both floral and spicy with a little bit of grilled pineapple, dried mango and grassy aromas. It’s very smooth and dry yet still has good tropical fruit that comes through and plays nicely with a hint of minerality, white pepper and a slight citrus ending.
For my money, this might be both the best Whiskey under $50 and the most criminally under-priced Whiskey (not that I’m complaining). Whiskey Advocate has named this one to their 7 best under $60/bottlings, but as you can see this checks in way below. This small batch bourbon is made from barrels picked by father and son master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell. It’s as smooth as can be and jampacked with notes of caramel, vanilla, rye spice and burnt orange peel. Bottled at 90 Proof, this one leaves a nice, warm Kentucky hug that lingers nicely on the back palate.
I once again found myself with one of the more and limited bottlings from the good people at Michter’s It comes in a round 111 Proof and is a monster from one of the best distilleries out there. This bottling is usually between 107 and 112 Proof but isn’t made every year (only in the good years). It’s oozing with seductive aromas of Cinnamon, rye spice, chocolate and freshly baked gingerbread. Cinnamon, dark chocolate, a hint of Cayenne pepper mixed with charred sugar and oak explode out of the bottle and greet you head on. I wish I had more than six of these beauties to pass out. Such is life.
