Tesseron Lot 29 XO Exception Cognac (w. Gift Box)

100 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate (Only 100-Pointer)

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Noe Tesseron to NYC for a private retrospective tasting of his Grand Fin Champagne Cognacs along with James Suckling and some others. The line up was stellar Lot #90 XO Ovation, Lot #76 XO Tradition, Lot #53 XO Perfection, every single bottle totally remarkable. Holy cow! I mean the amount of exceptional 30-70-year-old cognacs were off the charts. But a Cognac made from entirely 1929 juice?!? You better believe it stole the show in a way that I can barely put into words. Read below to see why Parker’s Wine Advocate says this was perfect… it’s hard to argue!

“The Tesseron family, who made their fortune in Cognac (but are probably best known by wine lovers as the proprietor of Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet) released tiny quantities of single vintage Cognacs. Although French law does not permit a vintage date to be used, this is all from 1929, and is very limited in availability. I’m not an expert on Cognac, but anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink. ” -Parker’s Wine Advocate

Let’s talk about Tesseron, a name that’s synonymous with both legendary Bordeaux wine and some of the most extraordinary Cognacs you’ll ever encounter. While many know them as the esteemed owners of Château Pontet-Canet, their heritage in the world of spirits is equally profound, stretching back an incredible four generations, with the fifth generation now actively involved through Justine Tesseron’s daughter.

The Tesseron family’s story in Cognac is truly unique. For centuries, they were the ultimate insiders, acting as master blenders and master distillers behind the scenes. They built up an unparalleled collection of aged stocks, some dating back to 1830 – a testament to resilience, having survived multiple World Wars.

These precious bottles are aged to perfection in an almost mystical setting: a 12th-century crypt, providing ideal, consistent conditions for maturation. Their Cognacs are crafted exclusively from their 40 hectares of estate-grown fruit, meticulously sourced from the most prestigious appellations in the Cognac region: Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, known for producing the finest and most age-worthy spirits. It’s only been in the last 20 years (since the early 2000s) that the Tesseron family has begun to bottle and brand these exceptional Cognacs under their own name, finally sharing their hidden treasures directly with the world after generations of supplying the major houses.
