Domaine du Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 2022

Jeb Dunnuck’s #21 Wine of the Year (2025)

97 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 97 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 96 Points, James Suckling

The 2022 vintage was exceptional in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Jeb Dunnuck called out “Ripe black cherries, scorched earth, sandalwood, and incredibly peppery garrigue and spice.” The Wine Advocate’s review sounds similar: “Dark-fruited, spicy style… full-bodied, rich and densely concentrated… a near-carbon copy of the stunning, cellar-worthy 2019.” There’s a reason she’s the Queen of Darkness!!!

This is a seamless blend of 80% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, with traditional varieties. Raw, powerful and super complex. Everything from fresh leather, to dark chocolate, tobacco, grilled meats, and raspberry puree. Still so young but built to age for decades.

Original price was: $100.00.Current price is: $89.99.

Beautiful stuff and one of the gems in the vintage, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée shows ripe black cherries, scorched earth, sandalwood, and incredibly peppery garrigue and spice. It’s medium to full-bodied on the palate and has a pure, focused, concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

A quick assemblage from foudres of the 2022 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée reveals a dark-fruited, spicy style, enlivened by hints of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and densely concentrated, with a long, silky finish, it looks to be a near-carbon copy of the stunning, cellar-worthy 2019.

96 Points, James Suckling
A very dark, structured and full-bodied Chateauneuf-du-Pape with aromas of leather, tar, raw meat and a hint of wild forest berries. Still very youthful and a bit closed, but the abundant fine-grained tannins give this terrific aging potential. A cuvee of 80% grenache, 6% syrah, 4% mourvedre and 10% other traditional grape varieties. Matured for two years in large, neutral oak.

Pegau is one of the oldest wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, established in 1670. It’s run by Laurence Féraud, who came back to the family estate in 1987 and turned it into an international legend. While everyone else went high-tech, Laurence stuck to the old ways: whole-cluster fermentation, ancient oak barrels that have been in the family for generations, native yeasts, no filtration.

The uber-talented Féraud even earned the nickname ‘The Dark Queen of CDP” thanks to her brooding blends. She’s known for making some of the darkest, deeply concentrated wines in the region. They’re almost haunting in the glass. But the sheer quality is why they are dream bottles for collectors.
