Domaine de la Charbonniere Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2020

The 2020 Vieilles Vignes is a must-have for Châteauneuf lovers. It’s easily one of the very best made in what was an outstanding 2020 vintage and comes with the big scores to prove it. The superstar estate led by Michel Maret has been one of the best in the region for two decades +. But it earned its highest ever score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate with this silky smooth monster. Jeb Dunnuck agreed, calling it “wonderfully done and should rank with the crème de la crème of the vintage.” This one is a beauty flush with black cherries, raspberry and licorice with massive shoulders.

98 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Even better than I remember it prior to bottling, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes—90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre—boasts bold, concentrated aromas of black cherries, dark chocolate and red raspberries. It’s full-bodied, rich and expansive, framed by silky tannins that ease into a long, elegant finish. Despite its size, there’s a fine sense of proportion to this wine and a notable absence of alcohol-derived heat.

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes comes all from the famed La Crau lieu-dit and is 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre that was brought up in a mix of demi-muids, tronconique tanks, and stainless steel. Awesome black cherry and currant fruits as well as licorice, roasted herbs, and peppery, meaty notes define this gorgeous 2020, and it’s full-bodied, with wonderful purity of fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s wonderfully done and should rank with the crème de la crème of the vintage.

There is one top estate – still very much a small family affair that has continued to churn out wines of amazing dimension from their relatively modest means for reasonable prices. That’s according to me, Wine Spectator, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and most anybody who has had the privilege of seeing the Maret Family operation in motion.

The team is still pretty small. The family originally bought the estate in 1912 and have been farming it themselves, generation by generation. Michel Maret – the grandson of founder Eugene – has largely allowed the reins to pass to daughters Caroline and Veronique (though not if you ask them!)

Though – for those in the know – the estate was already firmly established with the wine press. Robert Parker, Jr. summarized it well: “This is one of the most well-run estates in Chateauneuf du Pape thanks to the meticulous and passionate efforts of proprietor Michel Maret”.

But the daughters have managed to take the estate to even greater heights, including the inclusion of their base CDP at number 30 on Wine Spectator’s 2019 Top 100 Wines of the Year list. And this edition of their ‘Old Vines’ CdP earned the highest ever that the Wine Advocate has rated one of their wines. This is serious stuff.
