This is Redgale, Jenny Wagner’s secret wine that until this year was exclusively a tasting-room treat at Caymus. Somehow, a few cases made their way to only the best East Coast accounts, which is why we have it and almost no one else does. We’re talking about half the allocation for all of New Jersey – just 15 cases.
This is Jenny when she’s at her best, creating a gorgeous wine as an ode to Châteauneuf-du-Pape without any rules or restrictions. She’s arguably the family’s most talented winemaker at the moment, and when she gets to make wine with complete creative freedom, magic happens. This opens up a whole new, elegant side to Caymus that we haven’t seen before.
The vineyard sits on a southeast-facing slope neighboring Napa, with San Francisco Bay in the distance. Jenny chose this extreme coastal site specifically for its Mediterranean conditions – intense winds that never drop below 15-20 mph, abundant sunlight, and dry conditions that reminded her of the southern Rhône. As Jenny puts it: “Gusts of 20 mph can make it difficult to carry a conversation and my hair ends up in knots.”
