The days are numbered for interesting and available 2016 red Burgundies. The vintage is great; fleshy, forward and really compelling for those that like their Pinots on the sexier side. But production was down 50% in some appellations. It didn’t take long for the really good stuff to fly out the door. The late releases from producers like Camille Giroud are just in time to temporarily fill the void in the 2016 market. Camille Giroud, a venerable estate in Burgundy, founded in the middle of the 19th century and famous for making incredibly long-living wines was purchased byAnne Colgin from Napa bought the estate some years ago. Recent vintages have been nothing short of superb. You are going to want these.
The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin is a brilliant, dark ruby color to its core, with an expressive, complex nose that just blasts from the glass. High-toned and intensely fruity with an undercurrent of earthy goodness, its finish is long and stony, a classic Gevrey-Chambertin.

It’s a wonderful glass to enjoy on its own or with a nice piece of salmon or beef.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
