I would say in a given year I taste 4-6 dozen Rosés that people bring me to potentially offer up to the Nicholas Wines faithful. I cherry pick the top ones – the best values, the best deals, etc.
This is one of those that stole the show at a tasting – a full-throttle, energetic sparkling Rosé made from 100% Pinot Grigio in Venice.
It comes from right near Collio, just to the west of Gorizia, and is conveniently protected from both the cold northern winds and the characteristic “bora” wind of Trieste. There’s ideal gravelly/sandy soils and ample sunlight – perfectly balanced by super cool nights, which leads to extended hang times and juicy fruit that is roaring to go.

Pale coral color with aromas of dried flowers, red apples and grapefruit. Tangy and fruity with medium body and a dry, subtly spicy finish.
Almondo Roero Arneis Bricco delle Ciliegie Le Rive (Gold Label) is made from the estate’s oldest single plot of vines within the already heralded Bricco Delle Ciliegie (hill of cherries). This is only the fourth vintage of this label but it’s already considered by many to be one of the best white wines in all of Italy. Juicy peaches, pears, and a hint of almonds on the nose. The mouth is dense and fleshy, full of bright fruit, minerality and salinity notes with a touch of spice that’s the highlight of a finish that lingers and lingers in the best way. It’s an absolute treat that I really wish I could snag more than once a year.
Every month, Nicholas Wines will ship two wines hand-selected by Nicholas Harary. Discover a new region, variety, or style! This is the perfect gift for both introductory and expert wine lovers!
Roberto Ferraris has been crafting works of art in the form of Barbera from the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti for the last 20 years. He’s got a knack for making aromatically dynamic, elegant red wines, with vibrant, pure fruit that makes Roberto one of the very best producers of wines we can drink every day. Cut from the steep limestone hills, the old vines on this property pack an incredibly concentrated core of juicy black and purple fruited wine that absolutely sings with pizza, as well as summer salads, pasta dishes and dried meats.
What separates this newly released Valpolicella from its peers is the grapes used were grown for this wine specifically. This isn’t Amarone seconds, it’s a precisely crafted and seductive rendition of the Corvina grape that will appeal to Red Burgundy lovers. Highly versatile and elegant, Ca La Bionda’s Valpolicella mesmerizes with red and blackberries, anise and Asian spices with serious depth. The new 2021 is tightly wound with smooth velvety tannins. It’s so juicy and so dang food friendly. Folks are going to love this.
