Aruma Malbec Mendoza 2023

91 Vinous – 91 Points, James Suckling – 90+ Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Triple 90+ point scores tell the entire story for this beauty, and it’s a good one! Suckling gave it 91 points calling it “honest, fruit-driven, plump and pristine.” Vinous also came in at 91 points, and labeled it “Juicy and expressive with fine tannins.” And Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate came in just a tad lower at at 90+ points for a wine they dubbed, “a beautiful overview of Argentine Malbec” as well as “elegantly plush and vibrant with admirable delicacy and nuance.” This one is a screaming value that really should cost a whole lot more… but we’re not complaining!

91 Points, James Suckling
An honest and fruit-driven malbec that shows plump fruit and violet character. Fine-grained tannins on the fruity palate, with a fleshy core of ripe, concentrated purple fruit in the middle. Still fresh and pristine in finish full of fruit.

91 Points, Vinous
The 2023 Malbec Aruma is sourced from El Peral and Los Chacayes in the Uco Valley. This warm 2023 vintage was balanced by an early harvest, resulting in a subtly lighter palate. After spending a winter on the fine lees, this vibrant Malbec showcases intense purple hues, with pristine notes of fresh herbs, violet, cherry and plum. Juicy and expressive, it features fine tannins and lively fruit flavors, making it an energetic and primary wine.

This wine is a product of the very special partnership between Baron de Rothschild and Nicolas Catena Zapata, godfather of Argentinian wines and the man wine writer Jancis Robinson credits for, “Putting Argentina on the Map”. Two men of absolutely enormous stature in the industry.

With a pretty much bottomless budget, the two found the perfect spot in the Southwest of Mendoza in Valle de Uco where the truest expression of Malbec and Cabernet could be crafted. Seemingly every year since they started making Aruma Malbec, the result has been an outstanding wine and a one that sees big-time scores even with its super modest price tag.

Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec. This is truly the definition of a “No-Brainer”.
