92-point under-$15 Toscana IGT which very well be the best 2018 Sangiovese discount in Brunello di Montalcino.
Col D’Orcia literally means the hill overlooking the Orcia River. They are a beauty boutique winery in the South West of Brunello di Montalcino that make some of the most beautiful blends with Sangiovese as the main component.
This Toscana IGT is a Sangiovese heavy red blend with some distinct local varietals that wows you as soon as you pop the cork. Wine laws from centuries back prohibit this from being a true Brunello di Montalcino, but we’re not complaining. We have a feeling that under-$15 price tag would be a lot different if that were the case. This is a beautiful, smooth Italian blend at a silly price. A pizza wine has never looked so good.

Aromas and flavors of black cherries and berries, as well as walnuts and spices. Medium body. Fine, racy finish. I appreciate its tannin and acidity tension. Drink or hold.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
