Barberani consistently raises the bar for their entire region creating some of the most interesting, highly sought after wine. Ian D’Agata recently gushed about the winery saying, “Given the high quality across Barberani’s entire range of wines, with no duds whatsoever, I believe it is Umbria’s best estate.”
The Barberani estate is located on the Orvieto-Todi road in the hills above Lake Corbara where the River Tiber flows. This is the oldest and most prestigious production area of Orvieto wine, which is known as “Classico”.
Their 2019 Rosato is a particular high note from the estate. For the price, it’s an amazing opportunity to see what this incredible producer is capable of.
“Here I’m finding a beautifully perfumed expression of Sangiovese Rosato, as the 2019 Barberani Amore lifts from the glass with dusty florals, young peach, and melon tones. On the palate, silky textures coast across a core of brisk acidity, ushering in notes of citrus-tinged apple with sweet inner florals developing toward the close. It finishes fresh, clean, but also quite energetic, as sour melon and orchard fruits fade, leaving a twang of saline-minerality. This is so pretty, and at only 10% abv, it makes for a perfect summer sipper.” – Eric Guido, Vinous

“The 50% Moscato Bianco, 50% Brachetto is one of the most distinctive sweet wines in all of Italy. Exotic floral and spice accents soar out of the glass. Rose petal, mint, sage, dried herbs and hard candy play off bright acids and an overall feeling of crystalline energy.” -Antonio Galloni
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
One of my favorite places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. Although it is better known for the Moscato, Grignolino should be its calling card because in almost no places of the world does it thrive like it does here. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Grignolino is the product of 50+ year old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. Light in color to the core, bright and wonderfully aromatic, this is food-friendly red wine that can double just as well all on its own.

“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Bricco dei Merli shows a beautifully fruity, almost juicy personality that paints an authentic portrait of this grape. The Congo winemaking team has worked out its approach to elegant wines. This Barbera does not show any of the excesses, like sourness or too much acidity, that can sometimes characterize Barbera when made in less capable hands.” -Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
