98 Points (#2 Wine of the Year), James Suckling
Classy and sophisticated wine with toasty and stony aromas, together with lemon peel, oranges, quince and ferns. Medium-bodied yet weighty, with vibrant acidity balancing the strength. Long, silky finish of toast and white chocolate. Outstanding. Drink or hold.
Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca 2023
98 Points (#2 Italian Wine of 2025), James Suckling
This exceptional bottle earned a jaw-dropping (but well-deserved) 98 Points from James Suckling making it his #1 Italian white of the entire year. That’s a massive statement, but I’m telling you it is so very well-deserved. The depth of flavors here, the tension, the minerality, the purity of fruit… it’s a masterpiece all the way through. Of course this is a perfect fit with most anything at the dinner table, especially since it has spent some time in oak and is a full-bodied delight, but whenever I’ve tasted this wine, I’ve always been tempted to just sit with it in a big glass and let it put on a performance. If there was one high-end Italian white I’d recommend to splurge on, I’d suggest the this flagship bottling, the very best of what the undisputed kings of Soave has to offer.

MORE INFO
The Pieropan family are legends in Italy. Their winery has been around since 1860 and sits in the heart of the old town of Soave. Their secret ingredient to success is their three single vineyards, integral and historical backbones of the appellation itself that have made the most interesting, age-worthy whites in the entire region.
Calvarino, La Rocca, and Le Colombare are the three vineyards that together span 74 acres under vine. For decades, they’ve been bottling their La Rocca Single-Vineyard by itself, and it is unquestionably one of Italy’s most sacred white wine bottlings.
In addition to just the best land Soave has to offer, the Pieropans are a very studious, forward-thinking, and experimental bunch. For decades, they’ve been at the forefront of research, innovative methods, and extraction techniques to make age-worthy special wines that belong with the best white wines on the international stage.
