95 Points (Wine of the Year)- Tim Atkin, Decanter
The Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2017 is flawless. Master of Wine and South African specialist, Tim Atkin called this the best vintage yet of Berene Sauls’ Pinot Noir and it’s easy to see why. It’s a carefully woven, intricate Pinot Noir with harmonious notes of vibrant fruit and acidity. Atkin also compared it to Chambolle-Musigny, truly high praise for a wine born out of a small labor of love along the Western Cape.
With a brilliant purple color, a complex, wild-berry nose and a juicy mid-palate that finishes fresh and dry, Alois Kracher’s brilliant red 2017 over-delivers as a perfect spring-time red. Austria’s most celebrated producer earned 95+ from Wine Enthusiast on 14 different wines in 2017– securing the Kracher family’s as making the greatest wines in the world since the 1950’s. Imagine the 2017 Zweigelt as a fantasy-wine, with the fruit of a Sonoma Coast Pinot, the finesse and savory elements of great red Burgundy and just a touch of what we will call a Teutonic funk. A must try.
99 Points (#2 Wine of Italy, 2020) – James Suckling
A very special Italian Collectors item. Elements of cherries and cigar box seem to dominate, but then notes of almonds, more cherry, and then blackberry and leather seem to dance in and out. But when you consider truly great wines, ones that really deserve at least a 10 year slumber in a dark cellar – the price point can be down right frightening. Not so today. I think you could start drinking this soon and enjoy it for the next two decades easy.
The 2020 is a light bright pink color. Aromas of high-toned red berry and flowers just fly from the glass and pick up a slight savory accent as the wine opens up. Juicy and fresh on the palate, offering wild strawberry and citrus rind flavors that deepen and spread out on the back half. A long, focused and bone-dry finish showcase amazing energy for what is sure to be a new happy hour go-to and Tuesday night Hall of Famer.
