Juliana Layla Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2023

The 2023 Juliana Layla Russian River Valley Chardonnay comes from three of the most decorated vineyards in the RRV – sites where regular bottlings command $60+ and whose reserve offerings approach triple digits. Due to an NDA, I can’t reveal the sources, but I can tell you this: when you taste Russian River Valley Chardonnay of this quality, you can easily understand why collectors obsess over this appellation.

This Russian River Valley Chardonnay shines with a beautiful balance of richness and vibrancy, offering inviting aromas of ripe Golden Delicious apple, juicy pear, and a delicate touch of toasted almond. On the palate, it delivers a creamy texture balanced by bright acidity, revealing flavors of lemon curd, a hint of vanilla, and subtle streaks of minerality thanks to the now world-famous Goldridge soil.

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $22.00.

San Luis Obispo is right on edge of where grapes get ripe but in the right hands, home to some of the most exciting examples of Chardonnay that I ever tasted. Juliana Layla Chardonnay is a lively, cool-climate wine, loaded with crisp green apple and pear fruit, kissed with just a touch new wood.

Every year I try to source the very best fruit to make a Juliana Layla Chardonnay that bears my only daughter’s name. If I can’t find something absolutely fantastic that also delivers tremendous value, I pass. No harm, no foul. Anyone can bring you a $75 Chardonnay, but can I bring you an exceptional one for under $20 on cases that blows away $50 bottles? That’s the true test for a former Jean-Georges sommelier.

It seems like every year we find something better and better, but there’s one AVA I’ve never been able to even sniff: Russian River Valley. Kistler, Kosta Browne, Aubert, Paul Hobbs… Juliana Layla? I just never could imagine it. The Russian River Valley is the holy grail of California Chardonnay, where legends are made and prices reflect that reality.

But this year, the impossible has been delivered.

Perfect with light food such as raw and lightly cooked shellfish or a pan seared or grilled fish. A great compliment to pasta dishes as well.
