Xavier Vignon Arcane ‘Le Fou’ NV

Xavier Vignon’s ‘Arcane Series’ wines are his latest and greatest creation in an already incredible arsenal. The series is meant to represent the different terroir in the Southern Rhone and bring one singular expression to each bottling, but with the ‘Le Fou’ he decided to throw his own rule book aside and go all out.

‘Le Fou’ is a blend that features five! vintages from the most outstanding of recent years (2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017) grown in 10 different terroirs in the southern Rhône valley (including Châteauneuf du Pape, Rasteau, Ventoux and high altitude parcels in Côtes du Rhône Village). It seems like a lot– but in what should surprise no one, it’s a flawless, effortless blend that blows you away.

Robert Parker, Jr’s hand-picked replacement Jeb Dunnuck gave the non-vintage a resounding 96-point review, rewarding Xavier Vignon’s latest creation and describing the blend as having “…no hard edges, silky tannins, and a big finish”. If you, like me have been a Xaiver Vignon fan since Day 1 and are always looking for what’s next: I promise you there’s nothing bigger or better than this.

The NV Vin de France Arcane Le Fou is another unique wine from this incredible winemaker. This cuvée focuses on different clones of Grenache as well as just about every permitted variety out there (although it’s 85% Grenache). It has a big, sweet nose of blueberries, black cherries, lavender, and peppery incense as well as a full-bodied, layered, powerful yet seamless style on the palate. With no hard edges, silky tannins, and a big finish, it’s a singular wine (it’s mostly from vines in Châteauneuf Du Pape) to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years.

The ‘mad scientist’ Xavier Vignon returns with a new ace up his sleeve with a ‘Champagne style’ blend for the ages. Grenache from the best years in Châteauneuf Du Pape (2010, 2012, 2015) interwoven with beautifully fresh Syrah and Mourvedre added from the outstanding 2016 and 2017 vintages in the Southern Rhône. This is an incredible feat from the French winemaker we’ve seen countlessly break through archaic winemaking rules to make some of the best Rhône blend creations we’ve ever smelled or tasted. This undeniably great wine will be gone before too long… but I have a feeling the Arcane series is just getting started.
