A decade later is this the single greatest 2015 Bordeaux? Quite possibly. The Crown Jewel of Pomerol, this is a straight-up masterpiece that was treated to triple 100-point scores from Vinous, Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling. Dunnuck said it best, “A thrill a minute, wine doesn’t get any better, and I only wish every reader could taste this beauty.” But Galloni was quite poetic himself when he offered, ” Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No, there is not. “

100 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
I was able to taste both the 2015 and 2016 grand vins, and these are heavenly, magical wines that could not be any better. Starting with the 2015 Vieux Château Certan, it shows the opulent, flamboyant style of the vintage to a T and reveals a saturated purple/ruby color, a monster bouquet of blackberries, tobacco, kirsch, dried spices, and loamy earth, full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. A thrill a minute, wine doesn’t get any better, and I only wish every reader could taste this beauty. Drink it any time over the coming 30 years or more.

100 Points, James Suckling
The blackberries, blueberries, oyster shell and violets are so mesmerizing. Full-bodied, focused and deep. It takes you to another space and plane. Dried flowers and dark fruit. The tannins are perfectly crafted. Keeps going as you taste it. Drink in 2023 but why wait?

100 Points, Vinous
The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, sumptuous and explosive in the glass, the 2015 is pure class. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous, spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, licorice and menthol all develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today, it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No, there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

Vieux Château Certan is a true icon of Bordeaux, the crown jewel of Pomerol. This institution has been making wine since the mid-1700s, and its history is as rich as the wine itself. The secret sauce here is the unique terroir—that legendary Pomerol plateau with its mix of gravel, clay, and sand.

While many of its neighbors lean heavily on Merlot, VCC is a bit different, and it’s what makes it so distinctive. It embraces Cabernet Franc and even a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend, which adds a layer of structure and elegance that sets it apart. The result is a wine known for its finesse, silky texture, and incredible longevity.

The estate has been under the careful eye of the Thienpont family for a century, with Alexandre Thienpont currently at the helm. He’s a visionary who has pushed the property to new heights, and his work, along with his son Guillaume, has earned VCC an almost mythical status among collectors. Don’t expect a one-trick pony; this wine offers a complex bouquet of black and red fruits, truffle, chocolate, and floral notes. It’s an experience that evolves in the glass and, with a bit of cellar time, can reveal an extraordinary depth. It’s a wine that’s not just about power, but about nuance, balance, and pure class.
