The Withers Pinot Noir Oppenlander Vineyard Mendocino 2022

93 Points, Decanter

David Low (Anthill Farms/Williams Seylem) ferments and ages everything in 5-15-year-old neutral French oak barrels with minimal intervention. The way the wine comes out with such piercing energy, I can’t understand why more people aren’t doing this. Everything here is done to let the vineyard speak, and it does effortlessly. This is a show-stopping Pinot you do not want to miss.

His 2022 Withers Oppenlander Vineyard PN is a gorgeous single-vineyard Pinot Noir that was rightfully recognized as one of the best Pinots in Mendocino from the 2022 vintage. It received a big score from Decanter who wrote that “The palate is elegant, and mineral freshness ignites a lift that carries the fresh raspberries, salty blood orange, and smoky clove spice to the finish.” The key here is balancing the bright, intense red fruits with a splash of acidity from the nearby Pacific Ocean, and the fine-grained, velvety tannins. In the 2022 vintage, David Low does this to perfection.

93 Points, Decanter
This later-harvested Pinot Noir vineyard from the Mendocino County site, Oppenlander Vineyard, sits at a lower elevation, not far from the Pacific, and retains a consistent coolness throughout the growing season. It’s effusive with red florals, as dusty rose petals and mountain scrub are evocative of the forested growing region. The palate is elegant, and mineral freshness ignites a lift that carries the fresh raspberries, salty blood orange, and smoky clove spice to the finish.

Here’s why this wine is such a runaway success: David Low is the winemaker behind the scenes. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s also the founding winemaker at Anthill Farms after spending a long time at Williams Selyem—two of the most sought-after Pinot Noir producers in California. This is the same guy regularly crafting $100+ bottles, and taking that expertise and putting it behind his brother’s passion project, with fruit he gets to select himself from the Oppenlander Vineyard in Comptche.

Comptche is one of those insider secrets in Mendocino. It’s an area highly regarded for producing distinctive, “brooding” Pinot Noir with high acidity, savory forest floor notes, and structured brambly fruit from Dijon clones planted in a natural opening homesteaded in the 1860s.
