You know Carlo Ferrini. We’ve talked about him plenty – with multiple Winemaker of the Year awards from Gambero Rosso, the Italian Sommeliers Association and Wine Enthusiast. He’s the man behind some of the most celebrated wines in all of Italy. Well, he’s also behind this project. But this gem is something completely different altogether.
Back in 1974, Enrico Teruzzi and Carmen Puthod did something nobody in San Gimignano had ever done. The region was known exclusively for light, crisp, 100% Vernaccia. That’s what everyone liked. It was safe, easy-going, pleasant and predictable. Teruzzi decided to blow that tradition up completely. He blended local Vernaccia with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Malvaysia, then fermented and aged everything in fine French oak barriques. And he did all that in Tuscany. With white wine! That was genuinely avant-garde. As you can imagine, it also infuriated many of the locals at first. But, the end result was Terre di Tufi, a wine that invented the White Super Tuscan category and has literally been a cult wine ever since.
