Tenuta Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2022

99 Points, James Suckling – 96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe, 95+ Points, Vinous

“The 2022 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana is intense and spicy in the glass. Crushed ashen stones and grilled herbs give way to dried black cherries and spiced orange peels. Luxuriously smooth up front, this finds a lovely lift through a core of tantalizing acidity as saline minerals and the onset of grippy tannins firm up its ripe wild berry fruits. This tapers off with tremendous length and concentration, leaving a youthfully structured feel and a pleasantly tart sensation that lingers on and on. The 2022 mixes generosity with power in a beautifully balanced package that will promote over a decade of cellaring.”

99 Points, James Suckling

“The purity and clarity to this really talks to you, with red cherry, orange peel, citrus blossom and basalt. Hints of smoke and tar, too. The transparency is really something here. From eight vineyards with vines of 60 or more years old, the best vines being more that 100 years old. Drink now.”

96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe

“The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2022 Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso is drop-dead gorgeous, starting with its heady scents of wild rose, blue flower, camphor and dark, exotic spice. Made from extremely old vines in what are some of the rockiest soils in the denomination, it’s smooth, delicious and elegantly structured, delivering layers of ripe raspberry, creamed strawberry, bitter orange, star anise and crushed mint. A saline mineral tang signals the close while taut, ultra-refined tannins provide seamless support. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. Drink 2027–2034.”

“Proprietor Marc de Grazia is one of the pioneers of the Etna. Not only was he among the first producers to recognize the value of these once-forgotten, ancient terroirs, he also was the first producer to bring attention to the specific qualities of these vineyards by bottling single-parcel Nerellos that have become reference-point wines for the Etna.” – The Wine Advocate

“Terre Nere’s wines all possessed unbelievable freshness and complexity as well as huge perfumes that suggested Pinot Noir…These wines are astonishingly complex and ethereal efforts from the hillsides of Mt. Etna in Sicily.” – Robert Parker, Jr.

Terre Nere boasts 43 hectares of vineyards, including some of the highest-altitude red grape vineyards in Europe. Their vineyards are divided into three crus: Calderara, Guardiola, and Feudo di Mezzo, each with unique terroir and age.

The volcanic soils of the vineyards, characterized by ash, pumice, and rock, contribute to the distinctive character of the wines imparting an incredible elegance to the final result. The extreme weather conditions, influenced by altitude and exposure, further shape the grapes and ultimately the wines.

This is a gorgeous volcanic red that is made off just one portion of a very special vineyard. Here the volcanic ash is blanketed by black pumice and solid volcanic rock off the Northern slope of Mount Etna. Everything comes from vines between 50-100 years of age – it’s part of the recipe for a very special age-worthy Nerello Mascalese that may be the finest example you could find.
