This is an absolute knock out of a wine from a legendary Sancerre producer who sells a large portion of their wine straight to Keith McNally and his Balthazar empire. It’s an electric 100% Rose of Pinot Noir from the villages of Bue, Amigny, Crezancy and Montigny. It was all harvested by hand and comes from vines at least 20 years in age. That care and attention to details is what makes the big difference here. It’s bright and energetic with strong cherry notes, some tropical flavors and a strong minerality that comes from the limestone/Kimmeridgian soils from the Jusassic period. What a beauty and an absolute steal at this price.

Nearly neon in the glass, the 2025 Sancerre Rosé La Louée mixes white cherries with tangerines and nuances of curry leaf to create its enticing bouquet. It splashes across the palate with vivid tart raspberry and lime enveloped by soothingly round textures. Its minerality comes forward through the close, as the 2025 finishes with pinching tension, leaving rosy inner florals to fade. There’s a slight comparison to be made to a Jolly Rancher on the palate. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it.
Sylvain Bailly owns parcels in some of the greatest vineyards in all of Sancerre: among their holdings are the great vineyards of Grand Chemarin, Le Château, Les Chasseignes, and the famous Chêne Marchand.
That’s probably why Sonia Bailly and her tiny family domaine in the heart of Sancerre have become Nicholas Wines readers’ absolute favorites. The estate covers 12 hectares and is spread over 23 separate parcels in some of the absolute greatest locations Sancerre has to offer. They actually vinify the wines separately by vineyard, which makes sense when some of your sites are spots like southern-facing slopes atop Chene Marchand!
