Serego Alighieri Vaio Amaron Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2016

95 Pts, Wine Enthusiast – 95 Pts, Vinous – 95 Pts, Decanter – 94 Pts, Wine Spectator

The 2016 vintage was exceptional throughout Italy, but especially in Valpolicella. The weather was nearly perfect from March through September. Grapes were able to reach full maturity without any problems, and winemakers had as much time as they could ever hope for to make picking decisions. This is truly Vaio Armaron at its peak.

Deep and dark, with seductive aromas of dark chocolate, violets, black cherries, and some baking spices. The wine is gorgeously balanced – soft, supple, and fleshy with silky smooth tannins. This is a dense, compact Amarone that, of course, needs a little time in the glass to fully reveal itself. But once it does, good luck talking about anything else at the table!

Triple 95 points, the 2016 vintage and the best price in the country by a mile!

95 Points, Vinous
The 2016 Amarone Vaio Armaron is understated in the glass, forcing the taster to work for its delicate bouquet of confectionery spices, crushed stone, graphite and dried blueberries. This is a beauty—seamlessly silky and precise, with fresh acidity and pretty red berry fruits. Tactile mineral tones add traction toward the close. The 2016 finishes lightly tannic and quite refined, with a pleasant bitter tinge that puckers the cheeks. This is a fantastically balanced interpretation of Vaio Armaron.

95 Points, Wine Enthusiast
An intense narrative of deep, dark fruits and earthy notes, unfolding a complex combination of rich cherry and plum flavors interwoven with a mix of chai spice and rosewood. Its profound, enduring finish resonates, lingering in the memory long after the last sip.

95 Points, Decanter
From the estate owned by the descendants of Dante near Lake Garda, the Amarones of Serego Alighieri are rounder and smoother compared to those of Masi itself. This wine includes 10% Molinara from a specific pre-phylloxera clone of the variety grown in the vineyards, and another distinction is the partial use of cherry wood barrels for ageing, for a more oxidative maturation. Deep and dark, this opens with scents of Parma violets, cocoa and dusty books. In the mouth it’s soft and supple, fleshy and silky, the aromas reflected in its flavours along with intense black cherry, bright red cherry and lavender. There’s great balance here, and it’s a wine to relax into over the course of an evening either with or without food.

Serego Alighieri is one of the most prestigious and historic Venetian estates with roots that date back to one of the most famous poets of all time. The great Dante Alighieri (referred to simply as Dante) grew up in a wealthy family which allowed him to write poetry that we still read today including one of the most influential literary works of all time, The Divine Comedy.

The Alighieri winery was started by Dante’s son, Pietro in 1353 and has been in production now for 670 years. In 1549, the Alighieri family had only female heirs, and one of them married into an imperial family, the Seregos. Ever since that time, it’s been the Serego Alighieri winery, and their reputation in Valpolicella is rivaled. If you ever find yourself visiting, there’s no better place to go, the oldest winery still in operation in the region and one of the very best still to this day.

Part of the secrets to their success is their collection of vineyards. Perfectly situated on rolling green hills from 750-1250 ft above sea level on top of rich red soil with limestone and clay deposits. Wedged between Lake Garda and the Adige River, the conditions are always very mild and therefore extremely favorable. This advantage has remained for centuries, where more than 21 descendants of the poet have lived and worked.
