Perhaps no brand is more shrouded in misty mystery quite like Sea Smoke. The business model was unique. First every single bottle is made from the estate’s holdings – no purchased fruit ever – even if demand far outstrips supply. No required allocations. They have a list – it’s free to join. First come, first served. If you don’t want the wines, no worries, the person right behind you will.
The secret to Sea Smoke is the East/West running of the Santa Ynez river – an extremely rare phenomenon in the U.S. Instead of the maritime influence being caught by a mountain range, it’s influence rushes through the valley and into the vineyards.
Southing refers to the south-facing hillside bluffs found throughout the estate. The result is the perfect balance of immense complexity wrapped in elegance.

90-92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s highest ever rated CDR 100% from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate was described as, “Rich, velvety and long”. All three adjectives accurately describe what Xavier Vignon believes might be his greatest vintage of winemaking yet. His 100% Cotes du Rhone offers the best value in his impressive arsenal, with big, juicy flavors flooding out of this one and making it the ideal wine to enjoy with most anything at the table or by itself so it can truly shine.
In the excellent 2016 vintage in Napa, winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) had little work to do. With ideal weather conditions throughout harvest, clusters came in dark and juicy from both the Coombsville and Rutherford Vineyards where this delicious Napa Valley Cab was crafted from. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. This is a steal for the price.
The ’19 Nebbiolo, a product of warm year yet with a long, even growing season, is exciting wine, showing off the aristocratic, finesse side of Nebbiolo. This is medium bodied, racy red wine, perfect with earthy, home-styled cuisine, roasted chicken with morels, grilled beef or any kind of lentil dish. Act fast, it’s never around too long!
94 Points, James Suckling
From the outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik comes the Faust Napa Valley Cabernet. Always one of the best QPR Cabernets Napa has to offer, 2018 saw this bottling receive its highest score to date. That could have been one of two things: 1. 2018 was an exceptional vintage in Napa that produced beautiful fresh and lively fruit that is drinking wonderfully in its youth. 2. The 2018 Faust bottling is a racy mix of Coombsville, Oakville and Rutherford Estate fruit (much of it goes into Quintessa). Either way, this is truly one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have at this price.
