Once he took over Melville, Chad looked to sell his Samsara side project that he had started with his wife. He sold it to Dave and Joan Szkutak, a similarly passionate wine family who were ecstatic to break into such a great location in the Sta. Rita Hills.
They got the winemaking facility, the vineyards and the contracts from Chad along with a parting gift that they didn’t even know they were receiving at first – Chad’s 2015 single-vineyard Rancho La Vina Vineyard Pinot Noir armed with a fresh 94-point score from the most respected wine publication in the world, The Wine Advocate.
Of course, Chad’s Pinot has it all. Parker’s Wine Advocate highlights the, “tons of vibrant energy” the “pleasantly chewy-tannins” and even the “juicy freshness” three hallmarks of great Pinot Noir. And the best part? With a little age to this library wine, it is so stinking good right now – it should enjoy its prime from now thru the next 3-5 years.
Here’s where the best part comes in. This gorgeous Sta. Rita Hills Pinot was released at the winery for $58/bottle but due to the changing of hands in 2017, didn’t get a proper release party. That means that there were 12 cases just sitting there for the taking, and I locked into them all at an outrageously good price.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Rancho la Vina Vineyard has a pale to medium ruby color with aromas of blueberries, roses, crushed stone, tobacco, saline and tangerine peel with rhubarb, strawberry, warm red and black cherries and blackberries with tinges of woodsmoke and earth. The light to medium-bodied palate is silky, featuring broody spices and fruits and swelling with pleasantly chewy tannins and juicy freshness before finishing with tons of vibrant energy.

Smoked red fruits, dried herbs, sous bois, and earth all emerge from the 2015 Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina Vineyard. Another powerful, concentrated Pinot Noir from Chad, it balances its richness nicely with purity and elegance.

The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
