Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley Red Blend 2021

95+ Points, Vinous, 93 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

The process behind this beloved wine is intensely laborious. The team blind tastes each vineyard block, eliminating those they feel won’t contribute positively to the final cuvée. With such expertise evaluating 50-year-old Zin blocks, this becomes a can’t-miss bottling every year.
2021 is certainly no exception.

The 2021 Ridge ‘Lytton Springs’ Zinfandel is a dream in a glass. Big Red lovers, I cannot recommend this highly enough. It’s a powerhouse that can really dance. Galloni called it “Fabulous. Bright and vibrant to its core, the 2021 impresses with its poise” in his 95+ point review. It’s a powerful, fragrant wine with great structure and length, hitting you with waves of fruit, chewy tannins, and what Galloni aptly calls “salivating acids.”

95+ Points, Antonio Galloni –Vinous
“The 2021 Lytton Springs is fabulous. Bright and vibrant to its core, the 2021 impresses with its poise. Readers will find a Lytton Springs that is very much in reserve, as opposed to the rest of the 2021s in this report, all of which are more approachable. Salivating acids and veins of tannin lend shape and persistence, but the 2021 needs time. Red cherry fruit, blood orange, rose petal and sage are some of the notes that linger on the close.”

“Robust and rustic, yet retains a sense of style, with deep blackberry, savory anise and black pepper flavors that gather tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet, Cinsault and Counoise. Best from 2025 through 2033.”

93 Points,Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Lytton Springs is based on 72% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, and the rest Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Cinsault, and Counoise. This deep ruby/purple-hued effort has a juicy, lively, medium-bodied style as well as both red and blue fruits, some peppery, herbal, spicy nuances, lots of floral character, and ripe, polished tannins. It shines for its fresher, focused, elegant profile, and its purity of fruit is top-notch. It will evolve for 10-12 years

Ridge is one of those hallowed names in American wine with an unmatched legacy. They need no introduction.

Constant critical darlings, they’ve topped virtually every list imaginable for over 50 years. They’re best known for winning the second Judgment of Paris, where their Monte Bello not only edged out the Napa elite but also topped Mouton-Rothschild, Montrose, and Haut-Brion.

While Monte Bello is considered the flagship and one of the greatest vineyards in the country, Ridge has a second vineyard also in contention for the top spot. Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley is now celebrating its 50th anniversary, and from it have come some of the greatest Zinfandels ever made.

Lytton Springs is one of two flagship Zinfandel-dominant single-vineyard bottlings with complementary varietals specifically mixed. All varieties are co-fermented and blended from the start, an old-school, self-proclaimed “antiquated approach” that the world-famous winemaking team at Ridge believes sets them apart.
