When Piero Antinori set out to create the benchmarks of Super Tuscans in Tignanello and Solaia, he knew that the land in the northeast corner of the Chianti Classico appellation was very special. Dizzying elevations and mineral, shale based soils were the perfect setting to coax great intensity, complexity and tension in wine.
The wines from these special hillsides have long walked the fine line of power with grace. From the original parcels that sourced Antinori’s famous Super Tuscans, the view of Giovanni Davaz’s gorgeous estate of Poggio al Sole is downright amazing. Location is everything in Chianti and I am definitely a sucker for it but for as much as I like to drink it, out of the 1000 or so wineries that exist in Chianti, I can count on my hand how many estates are really good. Poggio al Sole is firmly in that handful of quality, organic, traditional estates.
Their high elevation vineyards bring out the Burgundy-side of Chianti Classico, producing lush wines with just a touch of earthy rusticity and great length. That was more important than ever in a vintage like 2017. Only high elevation vineyards were able to contend with the heat. Estates like Poggio al Sole were picking 2-3 weeks later than those at lower sites, allowing Sangiovese grapes to finish ripening slowly, perfecting the aromatic complexity and fine grain of tannins that make this wine so special.
The 2017 is a stunner, dark and juicy showing off aromas and flavors of violets, black cherry, and sweet tobacco. It’s fresh and long on the palate, a dynamite bottle of wine that will drink fast. Pair with anything!

But the newly released 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir really kicks things up a couple notches. It’s bursting with an intense, berried up fruitiness– when people compare Oregon as the closest thing to Burgundy in America, this is what they are talking about. Juicy and vibrant, with even more expressive floral, red fruit and sage aromatics.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

“Paolo di Marchi’s leaving present to Tuscany is this delightful 2019 Isole e Olena Cepparello. Cepparello is a blend of Sangiovese from different vineyards, selected by Di Marchi on the basis of “the best exposure, elevation, soil, genetics and age. I feel this adds complexity.” The first vintage was in 1980 when 100% Sangiovese was not permitted under the Chianti Classico rules. Those rules have since changed but the wine remains an IGT Toscana. It has a supremely enticing nose with cream and exotic spice, reminding me of Arabian spice markets. With the 2019 there is an added precision to the aromas, less heavy oak, and no greenness on the palate. It is concentrated with a rich velvety texture but without any heaviness and with a gentle unforced quality. The tannins are fine and very well integrated, in fact finer and better integrated than even the excellent 2016 vintage. It is of course very young now but it’s almost too delicious not to drink! An amazing, once in a blue moon shot at acquiring all three of the single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from the family behind Caymus at a buyers-only price of $120 (27% OFF). Each single-vineyard in the Wagner portfolio is very different– each with unique soil, climate, region and even Pinot Noir clone. Each is from the 2021 vintage and is new and yet to be scored. Not to worry though, these always rack up big scores and Las Alturas was just #11 wine of the Year from Wine Enthusiast in addition to a 96-pt score. The 2021 single-vineyards are sure to rack up the big scores they always do– but we don’t have the luxury of waiting. Now’s the time for an awesome collector’s opportunity.
