Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino 2023

Wine Enthusiast’s Highest Rated Soave Classico Ever (Tied 1st)

98 Points (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe

This exceptional bottle earned a jaw-dropping (but well-deserved) 98-Pointer that ties the 2022 Pieropan La Rocca for the two highest scored Soave Classicos EVER. That’s not a misprint. This and 2022 La Rocca are the only two to ever get 98-point scores. This also comes with an ‘Editors’ Choice’ designation, though that’s a pretty big ‘duh’.

They did not mince words when they opened with this: “This is Soave’s soul in liquid form, where generations of wisdom meet volcanic soils in perfect harmony.” They then concluded: The texture wraps around your palate like silk, while vibrant minerality pulses through every sip. A profound testament to this historic region’s potential.” Then they suggested it could be enjoyed thru 2050 at its peak. Absolutely unheard of for an Italian white! That’s what we’re dealing with here. The best of the best. An outlier in Soave.

“The Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino is always one of the best whites not just in the denomination but in all of Italy, and the 2023 is no exception.” -Italian Wine Expert, Kerin O’Keefe

This is Soave’s soul in liquid form, where generations of wisdom meet volcanic soils in perfect harmony. Alpine herbs and crushed stones play against ripe citrus and white flowers, building layer upon layer of complexity. The texture wraps around your palate like silk, while vibrant minerality pulses through every sip. A profound testament to this historic region’s potential. Drink Now – 2050.

96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe
The Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino is always one of the best whites not just in the denomination but in all of Italy, and the 2023 is no exception. Made with organically farmed grapes – 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano cultivated in volcanic soils – and fermented and aged in tulip-shaped concrete tanks, it opens with aromas of white spring wildflower, citrus, wet flint, Alpine herb and stone fruit. It’s dry and delicious, delivering pear, Myer lemon, dried herb and smoky mineral notes before closing on a saline tang. The advanced age of the vines, 30-60 years old, lends great depth while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and lends serious aging potential.

The Pieropan family are legends in Italy. Their winery has been around since 1860 and sits in the heart of the old town of Soave. Their secret ingredient to success is their three single vineyards, integral and historical backbones of the appellation itself that have made the most interesting, age-worthy whites in the entire region.

Calvarino, La Rocca, and Le Colombare are the three vineyards which together span 74 acres under vine. For decades, they’ve been bottling their La Rocca Single-Vineyard by itself, and right up there with Almondo’s ‘Le Rive,’ it is one of Italy’s most sacred white wine bottlings.

In addition to just the best land Soave has to offer, the Pieropans are a very studious, forward-thinking, and experimental bunch. For decades, they’ve been at the forefront of research, innovative methods, and extraction techniques to make age-worthy special wines that belong with the best white wines on the international stage.
