The 2023 ‘Le Volte’ is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and Petit Verdot, and it undergoes the same meticulous vinification as its big brother. In the 2023 vintage, this is as supercharged as its ever been thanks to a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon than most vintages. The wine partly ages in barriques previously used for the flagship Ornellaia and partly in concrete tanks – a perfect balance between tannic structure and fresh fruit expression. The result is an approachable, beautiful wine that won’t break the bank!

The 2023 Le Volte Dell’Ornellaia is a saturated red/ruby color and is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, raised in used barrels for around 10 months. Always a wine leaning into the fruity and approachable side of things, the nose is fruity and fresh with aromas of candied flowers, crushed raspberries, red apples, and fresh stony earth. Medium to full-bodied, it’s very elegant with a joyful ease. It’s a great snapshot into these wines, which are mighty tasty now and have a lot of character. Drink 2025-2035.
When one of Italy’s most prestigious estates creates an entry-level wine, most would expect a simple, approachable bottle that merely hints at the flagship’s greatness. Ornellaia had different ideas. With the 2023 Le Volte, they’ve crafted something that’s far more than just a “second wine” – it’s a legitimate standout that has critics raving.
Unsurprisingly, the press is all over this new release. Antonio Galloni of Vinous called this baby a “total delight. Fresh, aromatic and vibrant, Ornellaia’s Sangiovese-based blend delivers the goods in an affordable package.”
