Opus One 2022

After our smashing success with Opus last year, they rewarded us handsomely with a small allocation of their brand new 2022 bottling. I don’t expect these to last long and I certainly wish I had more! Apologies in advance to anyone who is shut out.

Call it skill or call it luck, but the Opus team picked their Cabernet on September 2nd – right before the heat dome hit – and finished just before temperatures spiked to triple digits. The result? A masterful Oakville Cabernet that Suckling calls “gorgeous, full, spicy” and “balanced and fresh-tasting” with “generous aromas of ripe blackcurrants and fresh black cherries.”

96 Points, James Suckling
Generous, with savory aromas of ripe blackcurrants and fresh black cherries and a gentle texture that shows a slight nip of tannin. It is well structured and a bit tight, which is normal for a young cabernet sauvignon-based red that’s a proven collectible. Gives up graphite and pencil shavings, some cocoa and espresso. Full-bodied. Spicy, toasty oak is really showing through right now. Best from 2028.

To wine novices and experts alike, few names if any ring out or carry the weight that the name Opus One creates. It’s one of the most elegant, sought-after collectors items that are on the market any given vintage.

Opus One is a partnership founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, France, and renowned Napa Valley vintner, Robert Mondavi – two absolute titans in the industry. Their facial profiles appear on the front label of the wines, making for an iconic and highly recognizable bottle. The two make luxury bottlings from their Napa Valley vineyards with the first vintage coming in 1979. Ever since that vintage, it seems like the demand has always far outweighed the supply.

The estate vineyards of Opus One are comprised of four parcels that sit on the western side of the world-famous Oakville AVA in Napa Valley. Two parcels, totaling 100 acres, are within the renowned To Kalon Vineyard which is the greatest Cabernet vineyard in the world. The vineyard sites plus the piles of money in resources plus the Mouton/Mondavi connection puts Opus One in a category of their own.
