Mayacamas Vineyards Mixed Four-Pack

What can you even say? For the first time ever, we managed to score a little slice of heaven from the iconic Mayacamas and I decided to mark the occasion with a mixed-four pack. We’re talking about a winery who out-shined countless Bordeaux legends at the infamous Judgement of Paris and ‘The Re-Judgement’ a decade later in 1986. These wines have become nearly cult wines and its easy to understand why. They are some of the most age-worthy, unique and absolutely gorgeous wines you’re going to find in Napa or anywhere else in the world. This is a collector’s dream…

Cabernet Sauvignon

99 Points, VinePair Magazine
“This wine continues to floor us vintage after vintage. We ranked it No. 1 on our list of The 50 Best Wines of 2018 and we awarded the 2019 vintage 99 points. The current vintage is equally impressive. It is a representation of the past, present, and future of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley. It shows the elegance and restraint of the ’70s and ’80s, the power and depth of the ’90s and early aughts along with the bright fruit preferred today lifted by lively natural acidity. This wine offers the powerful tannic frame of a Cab, while maintaining restraint and elegance. The fruit has depth but still shows brightness. The palate is somewhat weighty but with a perfect harmony between all the major elements. It has more tannin than 2019 but is just as wonderful — a perfect representation of the legacy of Napa and especially the high-elevation vineyards of Mount Veeder.”

95 Points, James Suckling
A creamy texture surrounds pretty floral and black fruit flavors in this elegant, poised wine. It escaped the vintage’s smoke effects, and offers pure blackcurrant and black cherry flavors that expand on the palate and linger in the finish. Medium- to full-bodied. Made from 100% cabernet sauvignon. From organically grown grapes.

Chardonnay

95 Points, James Suckling
This elegant, concentrated wine from a long, cool growing season is restrained, taut and fresh. It will be best with more time in the bottle, but it’s so fascinating now for the racy acidity and the mineral, almond and green apple flavors. It’s tangy, medium-bodied, layered and linear in feel, with a texture that’s mouthwatering. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.”

94 Points, Vinous
“The 2023 Chardonnay is a potent mountain Chardonnay endowed with tremendous phenolic structure and overall depth. Lemon peel, sage, mint, chamomile and dried flowers are front and center. Broad and imposing, with notable depth, the 2023 is a wine to cellar for at least a few years. Strong earthy and mineral inflections explode on the finish. The 2023 spent ten months in barrel prior to bottling, half in large-format oak.”

Mayacamas Vineyards is one of America’s most historic and iconic wineries. Their most enduring claim to fame is their role in the original 1976 Judgement of Paris where they shocked the world. While its 1971 Cabernet Sauvignon initially placed 7th in the blind tasting, its performance over time is what sealed its legacy. At a re-tasting 10 years later in 1986, the Mayacamas 1971 jumped to 2nd place, ahead of all the French wines, including First Growth Bordeaux.

The vineyards are located at a high elevation, ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 feet on the southern face of Mount Veeder. This height provides cooler temperatures and a longer growing season, resulting in grapes with high acidity and concentrated flavor. The soils are well-draining volcanic rock and ash, forcing the vines to struggle and produce tiny, intensely flavorful berries.
