Lexington Gist Ranch Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Pts, James Suckling

“The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Gist Ranch introduces itself with an herbal, lifted yet deep bouquet of turned earth, black fruit and pipe tobacco aromas, followed by an immensely rich, enveloping palate that remains impressively nimble. It culminates in an expansive, searingly intense finish propelled by ample tannins and focused acidity. As with the entire Lexington Wine Co. range, this should benefit substantially from further integration and congealing in the cellar.” -Parker’s Wine Advocate

Aromas of cassis, brandied cherries, raspberry coulis and chocolate torte are immediately attractive. That ripe, powerful fruit is joined on the palate by candied blood oranges, cigar tobacco, graphite and spices. Detailed tannins and acidity are threaded throughout, promising a long life ahead. Drink or hold.

Here’s the story: for a few years this was a limited production love project from Thomas Fogarty Winery. They would sell the wine mainly through the tasting room, but also release a few dozen cases each year to the retail market. Unfortunately, it appears they will discontinue the Lexington label. That’s essentially the only reason we can offer pricing like this for wine of this quality and acclaim. There’s nothing wrong with the wine—in fact, it’s the opposite. Winemaker Nathan Kandler delivered one of the best Cabernets of the 2022 vintage, and now we get to benefit from the label being phased out.

The big knock on ‘2022’ was that it was too hot in August. And while there’s no doubt that it was true for Napa and Sonoma, it was certainly not on Gist Ranch Estate—nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, strategically tucked away in the Santa Cruz Mountains. High elevation, cool climate, slow ripening. The kind of conditions that produce Cabernet with immense power and elegance.
