Le Fraghe is one of Veneto’s most respected winemakers, and it doesn’t matter which side of the river or lake we’re talking about. These wines have been staples in the NYC Italian restaurant scene for over a decade, but rarely made their way over to New Jersey.
Le Frage’s winery sits perfectly perched overlooking the shores of Lake Garda. It benefits from the protection of the Dolomite Mountains, the micro-climate of the Adige River, and the mineral-rich soil surrounding the lake. The wines Le Fraghe makes are perfect for this weather—bright, fresh, crunchy and zippy, the kind that absolutely shines when it’s served slightly chilled in a glass.
Of course, even with the best conditions, these wines still need the right hands. To that end, nobody is better suited to run the place than Matilde Poggi. Matilde is a legitimate institution in her neck of the woods, a leading winemaker and businesswoman who has excelled at the helm of Le Fraghe for almost forty years now.

94 Points, Decanter
This deceptively simple blend of 80% Corvina and 20% Rondinella from Matilde Poggi’s estate at Cavaion Veronese is an epicurean masterpiece. The ripe and sweet-smelling nose of red and black cherries has a hint of violet. The palate is ripe and fresh, and so juicy thanks to crisp acidity. It finishes as clean as a whistle and is utterly delicious. Organic.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 95 Points, Lisa Perotti-Brown
The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
