Lava Cap Cabernet Sauvignon California 2024

93 Points, James Suckling – 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast

I tasted this one last week and it just sang. Perfectly balanced, medium to full-bodied, everything in sync. Beautiful red, blue and black fruit that flows seamlessly from the first sniff to the last sip. Wine Enthusiast gave it 93 points, calling out “youthful boysenberry, red currant, bittersweet chocolate, and layers of mineral throughout the palate creating mouthwatering tannins to finish.” James Suckling also came in at 93 points for a wine he dubbed: “Rich but balanced” and one that can “be enjoyed now or cellared for as long as you’re willing to wait.”

Original price was: $30.00.Current price is: $25.00.

Lava Cap is one of California’s best-kept secrets. While everyone chases Napa Valley Cabernet at $80, $90, $100 or more, this comes from 60 acres of volcanic soil in the Sierra Foothills at 2,400 to 2,700 feet of elevation—mountain-grown fruit from 30-year-old vines that see intense sunlight during the day and cool mountain air at night.

Charlie Jones has been farming premium mountain-grown wine grapes for Lava Cap Winery for over 40 years. He’s built a reputation for his honest, hard work and has helped grow a small winery into something pretty special. This past year, he cautiously handed over the reins to his son Nolan. And in Nolan’s very first vintage, what did he do?!? He put together a double 93-point showstopper that’s practically unheard of for Cabernets in this price range. It’s safe to say this winery has a very bright future!
