Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Corcelette 2023

98 Points, James Suckling – 93 Points, Vinous – 93 Points, Jasper Moris

The 2023 Morgon Corcelette comes from 96-year-old vines planted back in 1929, and what Burgaud has crafted here is nothing short of extraordinary. Suckling was so blown away he wrote: “Please let me lie in this bed of violets and velvet and forget the world. In spite of the great concentration on the suave, medium-bodied palate, this is so fresh, delicate and precise.” Vinous and Jasper Morris Morris both came in at 93 points, with the former praising its “exquisite balance and purity” and noting the “mineral-driven finish cut in a Foillard style.” And here’s the kicker – this wine doesn’t lose a step on day two or three. That’s the sign of a truly age-worthy red that will only get better with time.

98 Points, James Suckling
Please let me lie in this bed of violets and velvet and forget the world. In spite of the great concentration on the suave, medium-bodied palate, this is so fresh, delicate and precise. Then comes the sensuous and energetic crescendo of a finish that sweeps you away. From 0.8 hectares of 95-year-old vines. Fermented and matured in concrete tanks. Drink or hold.

93 Points, Vinous
The 2023 Morgon Corcelette seems to have gained a little more precision on the nose since I tasted it from barrel, with perfumed, minerally red fruit that conveys energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, exquisite balance and purity. Its mineral-driven finish is cut in a Foillard style. Superb.

91-93 Points, Jasper Morris – Inside Burgundy
“A fine even purple black. Sensuality with balance here, as in 2022. This seems to be a great terroir. This has impressive intensity of raspberry and damson fruit, with a refreshing finish. Fine crisp aftertaste alongside the generous fruit. 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2026-2031.”

Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud crafts wines from Morgon that truly captivate, possessing an undeniable allure that challenges perceptions of Beaujolais. From old vines rooted in the fabled Côte du Py, his Gamay expressions are anything but fleeting; they unveil a profound depth and structure, often described as having a Burgundian soul. These are wines that don’t just whisper, they command attention with their vibrant fruit, tantalizing minerality, and an underlying power that speaks of serious terroir and meticulous winemaking.

Each bottle from Burgaud reveals a mix of ripe dark berries, savory earth, and a surprising capacity to evolve beautifully in the cellar. They are bold, expressive, and undeniably alluring, designed for those who seek not just a drink, but an experience. Forget ephemeral Beaujolais; Burgaud’s wines are built to impress, offering a lasting impression that lingers long after the last sip.
