Hobbs ALH Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023

97 Points, James Suckling

Agustina has been quietly soaking up every single thing her father says and does in the vineyard, learning the meticulous craftsmanship that has made him such a legend and using those skills to forge her own path. You can tell that she has her own style, favoring fresher, more vibrant and therefore slightly less ageworthy Cabernet. But the drinkability factor is simply off the charts.

Coming from a tremendous vintage in Napa, this totally shines. It’s a gorgeous, young Cabernet Sauvignon made exclusively from select blocks within the renowned Nathan Coombs Estate (not a bad site to work) where the soil is largely clay loam with igenous rocks and volcanic tuff. Agustina chose to age this beauty in 18 months with 29% of that oak new, so even in its youth, it’s already super inviting with a great bouquet of cherry, violet and forest floor. The palate is elegant and well-structured with layers of layers of red, blue and black fruits with thyme and some dark cacao. It’s a beautiful, highly rated Cabernet that James Suckling called “An unusually supple, approachable and suave wine.”

97 Points, James Suckling
“An unusually supple, approachable and suave wine, with soft, powdery tannins hugging nicely ripe black cherry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, wild sage and subtle oak spice flavors. Full-bodied yet well-balanced and elegant due to underlying freshness and good acidity. Drink now or hold.”

A Star is Born.

This is the very first release of the ALH Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon and it’s only going to a handful of accounts across the country. Heck, only about 100 cases of this Cabernet Sauvignon were even made altogether, but they’re pretty darn important in the wine world. That’s because this is the inaugural release of Augustina L. Hobbs’ Napa Valley Cabernet. Yes, that Hobbs, who had her father’s Paul help in crafting her first wine.

We’ve already seen how successful the partnership is with Steve Kistler and his daughter at Occidental. This is just the Cabernet version! ALH is a heritage brand that’s made for the modern era. Born from the shared character traits of the father-daughter team, ALH was born from lifelong learning and growth while striving to never give in to the status quo. Agustina’s approach to Coombsville Napa Valley Cabernet is contemporary while still honoring her father’s legacy of meticulous craftsmanship.
