Finding great value in the shadow of Italy’s two great wine growing areas, Barolo and Barbaresco, requires getting off the beaten path. One of my favorite places to look for great Tuesday nighters is Asti. Although it is better known for the Moscato, Nebbiolo could be its calling card because in very few places of the world does it thrive like it does here. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Monferrato Rosso is 100% Nebbiolo, the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve it’s incredible fruit. Purple to its core, bright and wonderfully aromatic, this is food-friendly, Pizza Wine red wine that can double just as well all on its own.
Gianni Doglia Monferrato Rosso Nebbiolo 2019
Now representing the third generation at the estate, Gianni Doglia is one of the leading growers in the region of Monferrato. Every time I open a bottle of wine from Gianni Doglia, I get the feeling we have a budding rock star of winegrower on our hands. His wines absolutely burst with fruit. They are juicy, long on the palate and deliver incredible bang for the buck. His latest release is a tank-fermented Nebbiolo.
Finding great value in Nebbiolo, the grape variety of Barolo and Barbaresco, is a really tough go. Like all great Tuesday night wines, to find value, you have to get off the beaten path. The hills of Asti, where I found Gianni pruning in the spring of 2015 at 9:00 at night, definitely qualifies.
The soil is special in Asti, sandy and laden with limestone, perfect for creating pure wines with plenty of finesse. The ’18 Nebbiolo Monferrato is dark purple to its core, while remaining bright and wonderfully aromatic. Drink it all summer long with grilled meat, salmon or a piping hot pizza or just by itself, it’s a delicious glass of wine all by itself.
